I Drank Warm Lemon Water Every Morning For a Week

These days, there are endless health and wellness trends that claim to help with bloat, immunity, skin issues, and every other mild ailment under the sun—but if there’s one thing that wellness professionals seem to agree on it’s the benefits of lemon water in the morning.

According to a Healthline report, drinking hot lemon water may help prevent or reduce weight gain, prevents kidney stones, and may even reduce the risk of cancer.

Sounds like a pretty good deal for something so cheap and easy to throw together, right?

As someone who’s always looking for ways to improve my health and wellness, I wanted to test the concept out for myself.

Here’s exactly what went down when I added warm lemon water to my morning routine—and why I’ll always have fresh lemons on hand moving forward.

Day One

I’m going to be honest, this didn’t set off on the right foot at all. I completely forgot that I was supposed to drink lemon water and made it halfway through the morning before remembering. Instead, I had it after I ate lunch, which left me feeling slightly less bloated than usual and made it easier to get through the workday without feeling like I needed to sprawl out on the couch.

Day Two

By day two, I actually remembered to sip my lemon water right as soon as I woke up. I found it was a nice way to ease into the morning but I ended up having an espresso afterwards.

Still though, I felt a sense of lightness even after finishing a relatively heavy breakfast. I also felt much more hydrated and less like I needed to be constantly sipping on water—which is what I tend to do on a normal week.

Day Three

By the third day, I really started to notice more definition in my stomach—which has been a problem area for me since I started seriously working out and trying to lose weight in quarantine. I knew that lemon water helped with bloat and water retention, but it seems like it might also be the metabolic boost I needed to move past a weight loss plateau as well.

Day Four

Here’s where I started to notice a real change that, for me, made all the difference. I don’t know why but I always wake up feeling wildly dehydrated—almost like I’m hungover or something, even when I haven’t had a single drink. It seems that adding lemon water to my morning routine has helped quell that, potentially because I’ve been making sure to drink it before I even start thinking about having a coffee, which definitely does no favors in terms of hydration.

Day Five

By the last day, I had really taken to this new morning habit. While I don’t think I’ll ever fully give up my morning coffee, I’ll definitely be continuing to enjoy a lemon water before grabbing my French press. I’ve also taken to adding lemon juice to my afternoon Perrier—I’m not entirely convinced it will have the same benefits as hot lemon water, but it’s a great afternoon kick and a very welcomed dose of vitamin C.
